Actives born of the cold: why high-altitude plants are the most powerful for the skin

Antarcticine, edelweiss, lingonberry, sea buckthorn, birch water, maca: discover why plants from cold, high-altitude environments concentrate such powerful actives for the skin, and how Pure Altitude, born in Megève, places them at the heart of its formulas rather than on its labels.

Nos Actifs• • 1 min de lecture

Above 2,000 metres lies an invisible frontier where life becomes a constant feat. The cold bites, the wind parches, ultraviolet light strikes unfiltered. Nothing in this world should be able to bloom. And yet a few plants cling on, season after season, with a tenacity that commands admiration.

In Megève, at the foot of Mont-Blanc, it was by observing these survivors of the summits that Pure Altitude shaped its vision of skincare. Not ingredients chosen for their poetry, but actives forged by the extreme: plants that have learned to protect themselves, to repair themselves and to hold on to water where everything conspires to take it away.

For this is the fascinating paradox of the cold: what makes life so hard at altitude is also what makes these plants so precious. To survive, they have had to become true laboratories of protective molecules. And what saves them from the frost can, in its own way, help our skin through the winter.

Here is the story of these actives born of the cold, and the scientific reason they rank among the most compelling in skincare.

Why high-altitude plants are the most resilient

In the mountains, every degree lost is one more challenge. The cold slows metabolism, the thin air lets through more UV, and night-time frost follows the heat of the midday sun. A high-altitude plant lives its entire season in this constant tug-of-war.

To survive, it has no choice: it must build its own defences. Where a lowland plant can simply grow, a mountain plant must armour itself. It thickens its cuticle, covers itself in down and produces antifreeze molecules that stop the water in its cells from crystallising.

This adaptation results in remarkable chemistry. To neutralise the free radicals generated by UV, the plant concentrates antioxidants: polyphenols, flavonoids, phenolic acids. To avoid drying out, it synthesises sugars and proteins that hold water deep within its tissues.

These survival mechanisms are precisely what interest us. In winter, our skin faces a milder version of the same aggressors: cold, wind, the dry air of heated interiors, light. Under these conditions, it loses water and its protective barrier weakens.

The molecules that protect the plant speak, in a sense, the same language as our skin. That is the whole difference between a mountain active and a decorative ingredient: one was forged by necessity, the other is merely a name on a label.

Antarcticine: the active from the ice that regenerates the skin

Let us go further down the thermometer, to the icy waters of the Antarctic. There, in an environment where water stays liquid below zero, live certain marine bacteria able to thrive in a cold that should freeze all life.

To endure, these micro-organisms secrete a particular glycoprotein, a kind of molecular shield that protects them from dehydration and crystallisation. This molecule was identified, then cultivated through biotechnology, and named Antarcticine (Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract).

On the skin, its value lies in its ability to retain water and support the skin's natural repair mechanisms. It acts like an intelligent film of hydration, especially precious when the skin barrier is weakened by cold and wind.

At Pure Altitude, this active is part of the Sève de Vie complex, alongside edelweiss, maca and birch sap. You will find it in particular in the Eye Contour Care, which shields this delicate area from harsh weather and dehydration, like an invisible protective mask.

Alpine Edelweiss: the antioxidant of the summits

No flower embodies the high mountains better than edelweiss (Leontopodium Alpinum). It grows where almost nothing survives, clinging to the rocks, exposed to ultraviolet light of rare intensity.

Its soft white down is no ornament: it is armour. These fine hairs reflect light and protect the flower from UV, while its tissues are rich in antioxidant compounds: leontopodic acid, flavonoids, chlorogenic acid derivatives.

These molecules do for the flower what they can do for our skin: neutralise free radicals, the agents of premature ageing generated by light and pollution. The plant has made protection a way of life.

Edelweiss is Pure Altitude's founding active, the one that gave the brand its soul and recalls its Megève roots. It lies at the heart of the Edelweiss N°1 Cream, hydrating and protective, designed to shield the skin every day against environmental aggressors, and of its richer version, the Nutrialpes Cream, for dry skin put to the test by winter.

Lingonberry and northern berries: the power of cryo-extracts

In boreal forests and high-altitude moorland, lingonberry, Arctic raspberry and cloudberry ripen under brief sunshine and freezing nights. To withstand these conditions, their berries fill up with antioxidants and vitamins.

To preserve all their richness, these berries are extracted cold: these are known as cryo-extracts. Toning and detoxifying, they are at the heart of the Lift4810 Concentrated Serum, combined with hyaluronic acid and oat-derived Osilift Bio®. A true technical base layer, this serum wraps the skin in an invisible tightening film, smooths its surface and helps it better withstand environmental aggressors.

Sea buckthorn: the deep-cold berry packed with vitamins

On exposed slopes, a thorny shrub withstands icy winds and poor soils: sea buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides). In autumn, it is covered in small, bright orange berries, true reserves of nutrients ahead of winter.

These berries are renowned for their richness: abundant vitamin C, carotenoids, rare fatty acids. This is how the plant stores its energy and protects itself from oxidation as the cold sets in and the light fades.

It is this active you will find in the Nutri-Regenerating Emulsion, a light texture designed for combination skin that wants nourishment without heaviness. It smooths, hydrates and regenerates, drawing on the generosity of sea buckthorn.

Birch water: when the base of the formula already makes the difference

We often judge a skincare product by its star actives. Yet the first line of a formula, the water it is made with, carries enormous weight. In most cosmetics, this base is merely a neutral solvent. It can be much more.

In spring, as the snow melts, the birch tree (Betula Alba) draws its sap up from its roots to its buds. This birch water, collected by tapping the bark, was traditionally drunk as a seasonal cure in mountain regions for its remineralising and purifying virtues.

Rich in minerals and trace elements, it gives a formula a living base rather than inert water. It is as much a philosophy as a technical choice: not to waste the first ingredient on the list, the one that, by volume, often outweighs all the others.

Andean Maca: the adaptogen that strengthens the skin

Let us leave the Alps for a moment for the high Andean plateaus, more than 4,000 metres up. There, in extreme cold and unforgiving soil, grows maca (Lepidium Meyenii), a small root that local people have cultivated for millennia for its vigour.

Maca is what is known as an adaptogenic plant: it helps the body better withstand stress. It was by adapting to extreme altitude, a lack of oxygen and wide temperature swings that it developed its wealth of nutrients and fortifying molecules.

Applied to skincare, this logic of adaptation makes perfect sense. Skin exposed to cold, fatigue and sudden changes in temperature is skin under stress. Actives from plants that have themselves learned to withstand the extreme help to revitalise it and restore its tone.

Pure Altitude: the brand that formulates with extremes

Born in 1989 at the Spa des Fermes de Marie in Megève, Pure Altitude did not choose the mountain as a backdrop. It made it its method. Every active enters a formula because it has a reason to be there: a survival story, a proven mechanism, a tangible benefit for the skin.

Far from a mere sales pitch, the cold is here a true lens: seeking out, among the most resilient plants, those whose defences can become our allies. It is patient work, where consistency matters more than passing trends.

The Ferme de Beauté's tip: in winter, layer rather than load up. A few drops of serum in the morning, sealed with a rich cream, protect far better than a thick cream applied alone. It is the logic of the mountain: several thin layers protect better than a single thick one.

From the Antarctic ice to the edelweiss rocks, from lingonberries to Andean roots, one principle links all these actives: what has survived the extreme has much to offer our skin.
